The best plant-based protein powder for a woman is the one still in the cupboard in three months. Four things decide that, in this order: how it sits an hour later, whether it mixes without a blender, whether you like drinking it, and what is on the ingredient line behind all three.

NØRSE CØDE is our answer to all four. The first three are what you live with every morning. The ingredient line is the evidence underneath them.

How much protein you need in a day depends on your weight and how hard you train, and published guidance gives a range rather than one number. A shake is a portion of that day, not the day. If most of your protein already comes from meals, 15g against 20g in a scoop is a small difference. If the shake is standing in for a meal, it is not.

Being sold to women changes less than the front of the bag suggests. Tone It Up and Sakara are the two powders here built and marketed for women specifically, at 15g and 12g a serving; the remaining eight run from 18g up to 26g. What separates these ten is the sweetener, the texture ingredient, and whether anything else came along with the protein. Figures below were read from each brand's own site or label on 2026-08-21.

The ten, read off the label

Powder Protein Sweetener Xanthan or guar gum Other fiber or additions Added sugar
NØRSE CØDE 20g Allulose, monk fruit None on the panel Acacia fiber, MCT oil 0g
Aloha Organic Plant-Based 18g Coconut sugar, monk fruit Xanthan gum Blue agave inulin Not stated on the page
Nuzest Clean Lean Protein 20g Thaumatin None on the panel None 0g
Ora Organic So Lean & So Clean 23g Not named on the page None on the panel Digestive enzymes 0g

Ritual Essential Protein 18+ 20g Rebaudioside-M, monk fruit Xanthan gum Sunflower lecithin Not stated on the page
Sakara Protein + Greens 12g Coconut sugar, stevia leaf Not stated on the page Wheatgrass and barley grass blend Not stated on the page
Sprout Living Epic Protein Original 26g None, unsweetened None on the panel Jerusalem artichoke root 0g
Tone It Up Plant-Based 15g Organic cane sugar, monk fruit None on the panel Acacia gum and oat milk, via the coconut creamer Not stated on the page
Truvani Organic Plant Based 20g Monk fruit None on the panel None Not stated on the page

Two notes on reading that table. Acacia has its own column because it turns up as "acacia gum" on some panels and "acacia fiber" on others, and it is the same soluble fiber from the acacia tree either way. Xanthan and guar sit in a separate column because they go in purely to thicken. Ours carries acacia and so does Tone It Up's, which is why neither of them shows anything in the xanthan-or-guar column.

"Not stated on the page" means the brand's own product page does not carry the figure. A US Nutrition Facts panel has to declare added sugars, so that figure exists on the physical label even where the website leaves it out.

The list is numbered for reference. We are first because this is our own site and NØRSE CØDE is what we would hand you; the other nine follow in no particular order.

1. NØRSE CØDE

Over a thousand iterations, over two years, and most of what we discarded we discarded on texture.

We ruled out xanthan and guar on the first day, which is the decision that made the rest of it hard. A gum is the usual route to a smooth mouthfeel in this category, and with that route closed the texture had to come out of the blend. Prebiotic acacia fiber is what eventually did it: it gives the shake enough body to drink like food. That is also why the label sits at nine natural ingredients or less, and acacia is doing two jobs on that label at once.

Three of them are the proteins: pea, rice and barley. Allulose and monk fruit handle the sweetness, and both flavors land at 0g total sugar and 0g added sugar, with no sugar alcohol standing in. It wets evenly in one stir, hot or cold. We make it ourselves in our own facility in Petaluma, California, so when something needs fixing we start on it the same week.

Acacia is a soluble fiber that ferments slowly, which is a large part of why the shake still feels like food an hour later. Two customers, in their own words:

"This is the first plant protein powder I've tried that doesn't make me gassy or bloated. The chocolate tastes great and I drink it almost every day and still love it."

"Really love the vanilla flavor protein. Both are delicious and super easy to drink. They are not thick or overwhelming with that protein powder taste/texture like most others have. I'm honestly pretty picky, unfortunately, but this is hands down my favorite brand. So grateful to have this brand in my life."

In a blind taste test of three protein powders, 55% chose it.

2. Sprout Living Epic Protein Original

Drink this one in water and you meet the seeds directly: pumpkin, sunflower, cranberry, sacha inchi. Nothing is standing between you and them. It belongs in a smoothie that already brings its own fruit, and it is a lot to meet in a glass on its own.

3. Ora Organic So Lean & So Clean

You find out how this one tastes by buying it. There is no shortcut.

4. Nuzest Clean Lean Protein

What does sweetness taste like when it comes from a protein instead of from sugar? It arrives on the palate a beat late, so the finish builds slowly rather than hitting at once. That is thaumatin, which comes from the katemfe fruit and is itself a protein. Three ingredients in total.

5. Ritual Essential Protein Daily Shake 18+

Ritual sells this in age bands, an 18+ and a 50+, which is a real decision about who is drinking it rather than a color change on the bag. Whether what a body needs actually shifts at fifty is a fair thing to argue about, and the company has picked a side. The rest of it is the shaker: it comes together fast in a bottle with nothing else in it, no blender, no drift of powder left at the bottom. Ritual also holds a Clean Label Project Purity Award and an NSF Contents Certified mark. Whether those are the thing you are buying on is a separate question, and only you can answer it.

NØRSE CØDE Plant Protein Powder

Before you spend anything, two disclosures. It contains coconut, from the MCT oil. And barley protein is in the blend, so this is not the protein for you if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, and we would rather you heard that from us.

NØRSE CØDE Plant Protein

20g protein per serving, dissolves in any liquid, no blender needed.

6. Truvani Organic Plant Based Protein

Vani Hari, who built her audience reading ingredient labels out loud, co-founded this one, and that tells you who it is written for. In water it drinks thin and wants an extra moment with the spoon.

7. Orgain Organic Protein Plant Based Powder

A doctor who had been a cancer patient as a teenager, and who hated the nutrition shakes he was handed then, started this company. That is a different origin from most of the category, and it explains the priority: it has to mix instantly and reliably in a shaker for someone who has no energy to fight with it. It does. Every part of how it gets there is legible on the panel, which is more than a lot of powders offer.

8. Aloha Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder

This one tastes like a snack. Aloha is best known for its bars, and the powder carries the same register: closer to something you eat than to something you take. Blended into oats it more or less disappears.

9. Tone It Up Plant-Based Protein

First came the workouts, then the powder. It drinks like a treat, which is a perfectly fair thing to want from a shake at four in the afternoon.

10. Sakara Protein + Greens Super Powder

Half the pitch is the greens, and the glass tastes like it. Sakara runs a meal-delivery business, and this reads like something from that kitchen rather than from a supplement company. It wants a smoothie with fruit in it, not a glass of water.

What no label will tell you

Taste. Everything else in that table is checkable before you buy, and taste is what decides whether the bag is empty or three-quarters full in April.

So we put ours in front of tasters who did not know whose it was, and our guarantee runs 60 days. Two or three weeks, drinking it four or five mornings a week, is how long it takes to actually know.

Conclusion

Start with how a shake has sat on you before. If one has felt heavy, look at the gum column, and at Orgain's sweetener cell, which is the only sugar alcohol in the table. If mixing is what defeats you, note which powders reach smoothness with a thickener and which reach it without one, because the second group asks a little more of the spoon.

Then drink the thing for a couple of weeks, because that is the only test that settles it.
